Tennis Elbow is a painful injury which affects Tennis Players, Golfers and other Athletes. The medical term for Tennis Elbow is lateral epicondylitis. It happens when the tendon fibers that attach to the bony knob on the outside of the elbow start to break down. These tendons anchor the muscles that extend and lift the wrist and hand. If you have Tennis Elbow, you may feel pain from the elbow, through the forearm and down to your wrist.

Your tennis elbow may be due to:
1. Bad Form (have a qualified teaching pro check your form)
2. Medical Conditions (talk to your doctor)
3. Your Racket

In the last 25 years I have strung well over 20,000 rackets for everyone from beginners to top ATP and WTA players. I have helped hundreds of people find tennis elbow treatment that works. Here is my story:

In 1982, I became the stringer at the Gates Tennis Center, in Denver, Colorado. It was ground-zero in the tennis boom. We had 22 courts that were filled to capacity, 12 full-time teaching pros and over 4000 regular customers. I strung rackets for many Professional Tennis Players including members of the ATP, WTA, collegiate, university and USTA nationally-ranked players.

I saw that, many of the top players suffered from tennis elbow. These elite athletes had perfect form. Also, they had never had elbow problems before. However, they had recently started using metal, fiberglass, graphite and boron rackets. The only thing that changed was their rackets.

THAT’S RIGHT YOUR RACKET CAN CAUSE YOUR TENNIS ELBOW.

That’s the bad news; the good news is that your racket may hold the key to treating your tennis elbow. Work with your stringer to find a racket, string, tension and grip that works for you. By stringing your racket at the right tension, with the proper string, and by fixing your grip, you can treat your tennis elbow.

The tennis magazines are full of bad information about equipment. They discuss the pros’ rackets, strings and equipment, and lead you to believe that if you use their equipment, strung the way a pro likes, you will play like a pro.

This is a lie. You are not a professional player. You don’t have their talent, technique or conditioning. Very few people do. Your equipment needs to be suited for your game, not Venus Williams’ or Roger Federer’s.

The pros customize their equipment. Bjorn Borg used a wood racket strung at over 80 pounds tension. Most of his rackets broke while still on the stringing machine. Of the few that survived stringing, many never made it onto the court; the frames and/or strings broke before Borg ever hit a ball. Finally, Borg needed 10 or more rackets to play a single match.

Many of my customers wanted rackets strung like Borg. They learned the hard way; the rackets broke often and had no sweet spot. Also it hurt to use them.

At the same time, John McEnroe used a similar racket, strung at 40 - 45 pounds.
Much looser than even most beginners.

HOW YOU CAN USE YOUR RACKET TO TREAT YOUR TENNIS ELBOW?

Ask yourself these questions

1. Is my racket properly strung?
2. Is my racket too stiff
3. Is my grip sized properly?

TREAT YOUR TENNIS ELBOW BY LOOSENING YOUR STRING TENSION.

Lowering your string tension or string can treat your tennis elbow. Here’s how:

Think of a guitar string. When the string is too loose, it vibrates slowly and makes a low pitch sound. As it gets tighter, it vibrates faster and makes a higher pitch sound. That sound is caused by a vibration.

Your tennis strings are no different. When your strings vibrate, that vibration goes through the racket, up your arm and to your elbow. OUCH!!!

TREAT YOUR TENNIS ELBOW BY USING THINNER STRINGS.

Changing your strings can treat your tennis elbow:

Strings come in various diameters or gauges (15, 15L, 16, and 17). As the numbers go up, the strings get thinner. Thinner strings are more resilient, so you can swing easier and still hit the ball hard. They also cause fewer vibrations to travel up your arm to your elbow.

TREAT YOUR TENNIS ELBOW BY TRYING A MORE FLEXIBLE RACKET.

Use a more flexible racket to treat your tennis elbow:

Stiff rackets require you to swing harder to generate power. Flexible rackets add power by bending and rebounding when they hit the ball you use less effort to hit harder shots. Also, by flexing, the energy from the racket hitting the ball is dissipated so it doesn’t send vibrations through your arm and elbow.

TREAT YOUR TENNIS ELBOW BY ADJUSTING YOUR GRIP

Re-grip your rackets or try a bigger grip to treat your tennis elbow:

Finally, the problem may be your grip. You may simply be trying to hold your racket too tightly. Try this exercise. Hold a pencil as if it was a tennis racket. Have another person try to twist it in your hand. Now, hold a tennis racket and have them try to twist it.

It was harder to twist the tennis racket than the pencil.

When you hit a ball, the racket twists in your hand. If your grip is too small, worn or slippery, you have to hold it tighter and tighter to keep it from twisting. This puts lots of stress on your tendons and muscles.

When your grip is properly sized and not slippery, the racket doesn’t twist in your hand. You don’t have to squeeze it as tight and put far less pressure on the muscles and tendons in your elbow. I am average sized. I built my grip up to 6”. It looks funny, but my tennis elbow is cured and I can play.

Try these free tennis elbow treatments that work
1. Lower your string tension
2. Try a more flexible racket
3. Replace and Enlarge Your Grip

These tips work in conjunction with other possible equipment changes including wearing tennis elbow braces or tennis elbow splints.
